Description
Witness to both the art of château architecture as well as good living, the
Château (XI and XVI centuries) is located on a hill overlooking the village of
St. Étienne de Baïgorry. The entrance to the château is bordered with hundred
year old trees. An armoury, medieval stairs and a spectacular roof built with
trusses made by the Vikings make it an architectural jewel.
The famous Etchauz family were a part of the Court of Navarre and then the Court
of France.
In 1850 the chateau was sold to the d'Abbadie d'Arrast family. The Château
welcomed as a guest Charlie Chaplin on many occasions since Harry d'Abbadie
d'Arrast was his script writer.
Right in the heart of a most beautiful region, the Château keeps tight inside
its walls the history of Navarre and France.
Location
The Château D'Etchauz is located in France, on the Spanish border. It overlooks
the village of Saint Étienne de Baïgorry which is situated in one of the most
beautiful valleys in the northern Basque Country and offers a rich variety of
mountain scenery.

If you can bear to leave the breathtaking surroundings of the Château, then
there is plenty on offer close by. As you are just five miles from the Spanish
border, you are in a unique position to enjoy activities in both France and
Spain. The festivities of the Tour de France are just 5 miles away, you could
attend the International Film Festival in San Sebastian, the Biarritz Surfing
competitions, or visit the birthplace of Ravel in St. Jean de Luz.
If you want to venture slightly further a field, you can go running with the
bulls at the world famous event in Pamplona, only 45 miles (70km) away.
It is also worth noting that Alain Ducasse is opening a hotel/restaurant only 10
minutes away and for the gastronomics there are two 3-star Michelin restaurants
nearby, one in St. Jean Pied de Port (8km) and the Arzak in San Sebastian (40
minutes away).
Weddings
The Château has the room to host wedding parties from 25 up to 450 guests.
Wedding parties can be an intimate gathering indoors or a large catered affair
outdoors, the choice is yours.
